Fullgás — Visual Arts and the 1980s in Brazil
CCBB
Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
A broad panorama of Brazilian art from the 1980s that highlights the generation's commitment to reimagining the nation and citizenship. This is how Fullgás emerged, its title drawing from Marina Lima's song composed by Antonio Cícero, which became an anthem of the era. Around 300 works by more than 200 Brazilian artists filled the eight rooms of Rio de Janeiro’s CCBB and its rotunda, organized into five sections: “Diversões eletrônicas”, “Pássaro na garganta”, “Beat acelerado”, “Que país é este”, and “O tempo não para” all titles of iconic songs from the decade.
With nearly 1,000 square meters, the exhibition design for Fullgás featured a single purple floor unifying rooms of varying sizes and spatial configurations. The furniture was informed by a detailed exploration of the era's aesthetics: tubular metal profiles, solid exhibition supports for CRT televisions, and a profusion of fluorescent lights, backlights, and a striking color palette. This collage of visual vocabulary, composed of previously scattered elements, was transformed into a cohesive language permeating the entire exhibition. The design thus invited visitors to immerse themselves in the aesthetic and cultural atmosphere that defined the Brazilian 1980s.
